Abstract

Language:

The decarbonization of the marine sector is critical for achieving climate action goals, leading to innovations in energy systems influenced by policies such as the Energy Efficiency Design Index from the International Maritime Organization. This paper introduces an expanded definition of microgrids as integrated energy systems particularly suited for the maritime environment, emphasizing their role in multi-energy integrations. We provide a comprehensive review of the current state of control, operation, and system integration for marine integrated energy microgrids, highlighting ongoing challenges and opportunities. The findings underline the importance of considering advancements in electrification and renewable energy sources to improve efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in maritime operations. Future research directions are also discussed to enhance the implementation of these integrated systems, further contributing to the industry's transition towards sustainability.
