Over the last 40 years, investigations have focused on the preg-robbing capacity of carbonaceous materials during gold ore processing. The objective of this study is to enhance the understanding of preg-robbing in gold ores that contain carbonaceous components. A total of more than 100 samples from 13 different gold mines across major gold provinces were characterized using standard metallurgical techniques to determine their gold adsorption capacities, which varied widely. This analysis revealed that the crystalline structure of the carbonaceous material, associated with its geological history, significantly influences the preg-robbing capacity of the ore, contradicting the previous assumption that only the abundance of carbonaceous material mattered. Utilizing Raman spectroscopy, the physical characteristics of the carbonaceous materials were evaluated, revealing varying disorder levels correlating with gold loading capacities. The study established a direct relationship between the structural properties of carbonaceous materials and their ability to adsorb gold, leading to a robust predictive method based on Raman spectra for assessing preg-robbing capacity. This predictive tool aims to facilitate better management of carbonaceous materials’ detrimental effects on gold recovery, with potential applications in mining operations from early exploration phases to detailed feasibility studies.
