A huge amount of overburden (nearly 8 to 10 times of the ore) containing trace amounts of nickel and cobalt is generated during Chromite mining at Sukinda valley, Orissa. This study aimed to extract these metals using multi metal resistant indigenous microorganisms, particularly a native strain of Aspergillus species known for their ability to produce organic acids, alongside synthetic organic acids. Mineralogical studies confirmed that there is no separate nickel-bearing mineral phase in the chromite overburden, with goethite and ferrihydrites identified as major minerals. Experiments were conducted with synthetic oxalic and citric acids at specific conditions. Synthetic oxalic acid (0.1 M) effectively leached 5% Ni and 71% Co from raw ore, while from thermally activated ore, it leached 43% Ni and 95% Co. Citric acid showed lower efficiency. The fungal culture filtrate was less effective, yielding 3% Ni and 12% Co from raw ore. However, for roasted ore, the fungal filtrate managed to leach 18% Ni and 28% Co under the same experimental conditions. The mineralogical analysis utilized techniques such as X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and transmission electron microscopy.
