Abstract

Language:

This paper presents a case history examining the estimation of capital and operating costs for a hypothetical porphyry copper concentrator with a daily capacity of 9,070 metric tons. The aim is to demonstrate effective cost estimating procedures based on experiences from various actual projects, highlighting how these methods can aid mining companies in deciding whether to pursue further drilling and sampling. The methodology involves a three-part breakdown: initial order-of-magnitude estimates, feasibility study estimates, and a comparison of estimated versus actual costs. Through preliminary bench-scale tests and established operational experiences, order-of-magnitude cost estimates were developed, which typically possess a 25-30% accuracy range. The findings underline the significance of proper estimation techniques in managing operating and capital costs, particularly in the context of fluctuating economic conditions. The overall results provide a structured approach for mining companies to better navigate the complexities of cost estimation, thereby facilitating informed decision-making in the evaluation of mineral projects.
