High purity electrolytic titanium is being successfully produced on a pilot plant basis by D-H Titanium Company, a joint venture of The Dow Chemical Company and Howmet Turbine Components Corporation. This project aims to commercialize bench-scale research from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, focusing on the design and operation of a single anode 5,000 AMP cell producing approximately 45 kg/day of titanium metal. Previous methodologies from New Jersey Zinc Co. and Titanium Metals Corporation revealed several limitations including inefficient diaphragm operation and high power consumption due to voltage drops. In contrast, the D-H process employs a stable diaphragm that is electrically isolated, allowing for better current efficiency and lower operational costs. The electrolytic titanium produced not only meets the stringent requirements for aerospace applications, particularly with regards to fracture toughness and low iron content, but also yields a fine crystalline structure suitable for powder metallurgy applications. It is anticipated that by 1980, the D-H Titanium electrolytic sponge will be qualified for use in critical components of jet engine compressors.
