Abstract

Language:

This paper identifies current trends in heap leaching based on consulting work conducted at more than 70 heap leach operations from 1986 to 1989. It outlines several trends, including the preferred use of belt-drop agglomeration at heap leach operations, which offers significant capital and operational cost savings compared to traditional drum agglomerators. The methodology involves the design of conveyor systems equipped for belt-drop agglomeration, allowing for effective mixing with pH control reagents such as lime or cement before ore stacking. This technique has been shown to reduce cyanide consumption significantly during the leaching process, with pilot-scale tests indicating a 30% decrease in reagent usage when pre-treatment is utilized. Furthermore, the trend towards conveyor stacking of heaps facilitates the establishment of more heaps each year, reducing costs associated with transportation and labor. The transition to these modern approaches is indicative of evolving practices in mineral processing, emphasizing efficiency and cost-effectiveness in heap leaching operations. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of these methodologies and their implications for the future of heap leaching in mining.
