Abstract

Language:

The continuous casting process has undergone significant advancements, resulting in over 90% of global steel production being continuously cast. This chapter focuses on the role of mould fluxes, which are synthetic slags composed of a variety of oxides and minerals, essential for producing high-quality semi-finished steel products. The objective is to explore the composition and functions of these mould fluxes within the continuous casting framework. The methodology involves a detailed examination of the chemical composition of mould fluxes, specifying the primary oxides present and their optimal ratios, as well as the different methods of application during the casting process. Key findings indicate that the properties of mould fluxes are critical in maintaining the integrity of the casting process, influencing factors such as solidification and steel quality. Furthermore, the chapter emphasizes that automating the addition of mould fluxes enhances stability in the casting conditions, thus improving product outcomes. Overall, understanding the composition and functionality of mould fluxes is vital to optimizing the continuous casting process and meeting the demands for high-quality steel production.
