Construction blasting near sensitive structures, particularly at a landmark like Sanford Stadium, poses unique challenges. This study details a project conducted at the University of Georgia where blasting took place less than 100 feet from student dormitories. The project involved trench and mass blasting for utility relocation and plaza construction. Rigorous safety measures were implemented, requiring preapproval of all shots and continuous oversight from contractors and blasting consultants, aimed at ensuring minimal vibration to surrounding structures. The blasting activities ran from March 22, 2010, to April 30, 2010, completing 25 shots within 30 working days. Continuous vibration monitoring was conducted to assess impact on nearby structures, with the analysis showing no claims of damage. The project was completed ahead of schedule, in time for the football season opener on September 4, 2010. The successful outcomes demonstrated that effective planning and collaboration can lead to safe blasting operations in close proximity to critical infrastructure.
