This paper presents a discussion on the application of cellulose as a renewable, biocompatible and biodegradable biopolymer in biomedical and pharmaceutical platforms through the 3D bioprinting technique, especially in drug delivery and tissue engineering. It provides a general discussion of the structural, physicochemical, and biological characteristics of cellulose that predisposes it to be used as a bioink, scaffold, and drug delivery systems. The originality of this work is the description of the successful correspondence between cellulose derivatives and up-to-date 3D bioprinting strategies showing how cellulose-based bioinks can promote printability, mechanical strength, and cell viability and allow the release of drugs in a controlled and targeted fashion. Also, the review sheds light on the synergic exploitation of bacterial cellulose, nanocellulose and chemically modified cellulose in the development of individualized therapeutic platforms and stimuli responsive drug delivery systems. This paper focuses on the contribution of cellulose, which is vital in the progress of sustainable and patient-specific biomedical technologies through advanced 3D printing and, where applicable, 3D bioprinting technologies. The article enables the translation of material science and bio fabrication towards the establishment of regenerative, cost-effective, and versatile (clinically) applications in regenerative medicine, wound healing, and targeted delivery of drugs. Its importance also consists in the fact that it will allow studying the new limitations of scalability, solubility, and regulation and overcome them in the future, which will ultimately lead to the use of cellulose as a prominent material by the way of next-generation bioprinting.
