Abstract

Language:

Copper is a non-polymorphous metal characterized by a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice, exhibiting notable heat and electric conductivity, which varies with the addition of alloying elements such as zinc and nickel. The production of copper from ores, involving mining, crushing, and processing through leaching and electrowinning or smelting, establishes the foundation for its use across various industrial sectors. This work details the classification and casting techniques of copper and its alloys while highlighting the need for high-performance materials to meet the challenges of modern applications. It also discusses the mechanical properties of copper alloys, emphasizing their ductility, corrosion resistance, and suitability for deformation studies. Contemporary manufacturing trends, including lead-free alloys and severe plastic deformation processes, are examined, showcasing advancements that enhance tensile and fatigue strength. Additionally, the application of archaeometallurgy techniques to ancient copper alloys illustrates the historical significance and evolution of these materials. This text serves as a valuable resource for engineering professionals, manufacturers, and materials scientists seeking to deepen their understanding of copper and its alloys.
