Abstract

Brazil is the largest producer of crude steel in the Americas by BOF process and many challenges come along with the increasing market demand. This study aims to address the premature failures associated with the overlay welded tube technology in BOF hood structures. The methodology focuses on using co-extruded tube technology, referred to as composite tube by Sandvik, which provides a significant advantage in enhancing hood performance without compromising the BOF process. Results indicate that the composite tube ensures a 100% metallurgical bond, promoting stable expansion, enhanced heat exchange efficiency, better corrosion resistance, and improved surface finishing. The implementation of this technology is highly recommended to other steel mills facing similar challenges, as it not only addresses safety and productivity concerns but also ensures that the continuous market demands are met effectively. The adoption of composite tubes demonstrates its suitability in environments experiencing thermal fatigue at 1800°C, thereby reducing the risk of stress cracking and wear.
