This study investigates the experimental generation of stratified turbulence dominated by internal gravity waves, a phenomenon pertinent to ocean dynamics. The objective is to reach turbulent regimes characterized by low Froude numbers and high Reynolds numbers utilizing the Coriolis facility in Grenoble, which provides a large experimental domain. To achieve stratification, vertically linearly varying salt concentration is applied, and large-scale waves are forced within a 6 × 6 × 1 m³ domain. Methodologically, time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) is utilized to probe the velocity field's space-time structure. The results reveal a complex spectral composition, characterized by a wide band of wave modes alongside discrete and continuum parts indicative of weakly nonlinear wave turbulence, albeit differing from the classic Garrett & Munk spectrum. This observation suggests that the turbulence of strongly stratified fluids behaves as wave turbulence of internal waves, leading to insights into the underlying physics of turbulence transitions down to small cut-off length scales, hence opening avenues for further exploration of nonlinear dynamics in oceanic and atmospheric contexts.
