Abstract

Language:

This lab manual is designed for the MSE 311 course at IIT Kanpur during the 2015-2016 academic year, focusing on the principles and applications of physical metallurgy. The primary objective is to provide students with hands-on experience in various metallurgical experiments, including nucleation and growth in eutectoid steel, recovery and recrystallization processes, and thermal analysis of phase transformations. The methodology involves structured lab sessions complemented by project guidelines that require students to analyze different materials and their responses to various treatments. Results from the experiments are intended to deepen students' understanding of microstructural changes and material behavior under different conditions. The lab assessments include daily lab jobs, lab reports, vivas, and a final exam, emphasizing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. This comprehensive approach ensures that students gain a robust foundation in physical metallurgy while developing critical experimental techniques.
