This study investigates the electroplating of nickel onto steel substrates using an acetate-based bath containing nickel acetate, nickel chloride, boric acid, and acetic acid, focusing on various operating conditions such as bath composition, current density, and temperature. The objectives include optimizing deposition parameters via Hull Cell experiments and examining the effects of these parameters on cathodic current efficiency and throwing power. Potentiodynamic polarization studies of nickel deposits indicate a shift in corrosion potential towards more negative values, suggesting cathodic control over the corrosion reaction. Additionally, it was observed that the charge transfer resistance increases with deposit thickness, while the double layer capacitance decreases, highlighting the physical changes in deposit characteristics and their implications for corrosion resistance. These findings contribute to the existing knowledge of nickel electroplating processes and the benefits of utilizing acetate electrolytes due to their lower toxicity and environmental impact. The research furthers our understanding of the electrochemical behavior of nickel deposits in various bath compositions and can inform industrial applications in surface coating technologies.
