This paper discusses solution mining, a method originally defined for the dissolution of soluble salts, which has evolved to encompass various techniques including heap leaching and in-place leaching. The objective is to review the expanded definition and application of solution mining, particularly for low-grade minerals and waste recovery. The methodology involves analyzing the chemical processes involved in solution mining, where valuable minerals are extracted from ores using solvents. Results indicate that this technique is beneficial in multiple aspects, such as safety, environmental considerations, and cost efficiency compared to conventional mining. Solution mining not only reduces manpower and accident rates but also has a lesser impact on the environment, facilitating the acquisition of operating permits. Additionally, the possibility of recovering metal values from sub-marginal ores suggests an increase in total ore reserves. Thus, solution mining presents itself as a favorable alternative for sustainable mineral extraction in mining operations.
