This is a summary of investigations in the field of pressure leaching carried out at the Institute for Extractive Metallurgy of the Technical University of Berlin-West during the last seven years. The objective was to explore the efficient dispersion of gas in a liquid and its dissolution, as well as the events at the phase boundary when leaching zinc sulfide. The study includes the kinetic aspects of pressure leaching and its applications to the processing of smelter by-products. Methodology involved experiments using a lucite container with adjustable baffles and a hollow shaft stirrer to investigate the efficiency of self-sucking stirrers in low viscosity solutions and the effect of ultrasonics. Results indicated that the dissolution of ores and by-products can be enhanced by optimizing the mass transfer conditions, focusing on the dispersion of gas and the solid suspension. Additionally, two examples illustrate the practical use of pressure leaching in processing smelter by-products. The findings contribute to the understanding of pressure leaching processes and offer insights for industrial applications.
