This document highlights the importance of controlled transitioning in the management of forage crops, particularly fodder beet, and its implications for animal health and environmental considerations. The objective is to outline effective feeding strategies to minimize nutritional risks and optimize animal performance. A review of feeding practices reveals that accurate yield estimates in paddocks enhance feed allocation and decrease acidosis risk. Recommended practices include gradual introduction of fodder beet to lactating cows and monitoring nitrogen intake to avoid adverse health effects. The study further discusses risks associated with swede and kale crops, particularly noting the potential for liver damage and bloat during specific conditions. The methodology involved monitoring blood metabolites in cows transitioning to kale and fodder beet, revealing significant variations in metabolic responses over time. Results indicate that while blood metabolite concentrations, like AST and GGT, rose quickly with kale, similar changes in fodder beet were delayed. Overall, this research provides insights into best management practices for forage crops, including the effects on animal health and environmental sustainability.
