The heat transfer processes and molten metal bath kinetics in electric arc furnaces are influenced significantly by variations in arc length and voltage. This study aimed to explore the length-voltage characteristics of electric arcs using a pilot-scale AC electric arc furnace, employing image analysis to determine arc length and gathering electrical data alongside slag composition. The findings revealed a non-linear relationship between arc length and voltage that depends on the slag composition. Additionally, the voltage gradients of the arcs were evaluated as a function of arc length and the combined voltage drops at the anode and cathode, yielding a reciprocal relationship. The research also provided estimates of the electrical conductivity of the arc plasma in relation to arc length, contributing valuable insights into optimizing electric arc furnace operations and enhancing overall heating efficiency. The correlations derived from this study can facilitate better adjustments in industrial furnace parameters to improve efficiency and reduce operational risks.
