SCAIL-UP Consortium, Monica Solay
The SCAIL-UP project aimed at developing a novel manufacturing process for aluminium plating utilizing ionic liquids, which represents a significant advancement over traditional harmful techniques such as Chromium VI electroplating. Launched on November 1, 2013, and concluding on October 31, 2016, the project sought to enhance energy and material efficiency in the production of high-tech engineered metallic materials intended for automotive and aeronautic applications. Key objectives included addressing barriers to the industrialization of ionic liquid electrodeposition processes and creating standard protocols for manufacturers around the established requirements and specifications for final products. The collaborative project involved various partners who provided comprehensive lists of specifications crucial for qualifying the products for the targeted sectors. By ultimately replacing environmentally damaging processes, the project is positioned to foster sustainable manufacturing practices while achieving the quality standards necessary for advanced applications. This report summarizes the project’s outcomes, effectiveness in meeting its goals, and pathways for implementation in future production scenarios.
