Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the reactivity of blast-furnace slag in Portland cement blends under varying hydration conditions. The objective was to assess how hydration temperature and water-to-solids ratios affected the slag's reactivity in blended cements containing 30% and 50% slag. Experimental pastes were hydrated at 10°C, 30°C, and 50°C for up to six months with specific water-to-solids ratios. Results indicated that reactivity significantly increased with higher hydration temperatures, lower slag replacement levels, and specific water-to-solids ratios. The slag exhibiting the highest vitreous fraction demonstrated a maximum degree of reaction of 50% at 50°C, with a 30% slag ratio and a water-to-solids ratio of 0.50. Conversely, the least reactive condition resulted in only 20% hydration at 10°C with 50% slag content and a water-to-solids ratio of 0.35. These findings contribute to the understanding of how different hydration conditions influence the performance of slag in blended cement systems.
