A geological repository of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level waste (HLW) presents various complexities concerning the assessment of radionuclide migration and safety mechanisms yet remains undeveloped globally. This paper reviews the solubility assessment methodology for radionuclides in the context of geological disposal, emphasizing the importance of radionuclide solubility in environmental safety. It highlights the ability to model radionuclide dissolution conditions critical for repository safety evaluation. The research is based on the framework established by the International Atomic Energy Agency on Improvement of Safety Assessment Methodologies for Near Surface Disposal Facilities (ISAM). The study identifies necessary information required for modeling radionuclide solubility limits which will serve as a foundational basis for future investigations. These future studies aim to estimate radionuclide solubility under conditions similar to potential SNF disposal sites in Lithuania, addressing essential concerns for environmental safety and waste management strategies.
