The generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) has surged in Oman due to rapid economic development and urbanization, with projections indicating an increase from 1.5 million tons in 2012 to 1.89 million tons by 2030. This escalating waste generation poses significant challenges, including heightened greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and inadequate waste management practices. Currently, Oman lacks a source separation system for organic and inorganic waste, resulting in indiscriminate landfill disposal that exacerbates public health risks and environmental pollution. This paper aims to assess the state of waste generation and management in Oman, emphasizing the urgent need for improved waste prevention strategies and the establishment of MSW energy recovery facilities. A review of existing literature and environmental reports provides insights into MSW characteristics, composition, and potential energy recovery opportunities in the region. The findings emphasize that implementing systematic source separation and energy recovery initiatives are critical steps toward sustainable waste management. This not only addresses the volume and mass of waste but also mitigates health hazards associated with waste disposal practices. Ultimately, advancing Oman’s waste management infrastructure is crucial for reducing GHG emissions and promoting a healthier environment.
