The research work presented in this paper is on a biotechnological investigation for the recovery of zinc from mining waste, specifically low-grade ore. Leaching studies were carried out at different pH levels using a mixed culture grown from mine water. The findings revealed that recovery of zinc in the control set (without culture) was 8% in 37 days, while utilizing the culture of leaching bacteria at pH 1.6 increased zinc recovery to 89%. At pH levels of 1.8 and 2.0, the recoveries were 47% and 46%, respectively, indicating that the optimal leaching of low-grade ore occurs at pH 1.6. It was determined that zinc recovery is not solely dependent on the iron content in the solution, as variations in recovery were observed even with consistent iron levels. This suggests the involvement of both direct and indirect reaction mechanisms during the leaching process. The study underscores the importance of utilizing microbial cultures in the bioleaching process to enhance metal recovery from mining waste.
