The last extended copper smelting and converting survey dates back to the 2003 International Copper Conference held in Santiago, Chile. This paper aims to provide an updated overview of the copper smelting landscape, which has changed significantly over the past 15 years, with production shifting from the Americas to China and the adoption of new technologies such as Top-Submerged Lancing (TSL) and Bottom-Blowing technologies. A comprehensive survey utilizing data from various sources, including the International Copper Study Group (ICSG) and Wood Mackenzie, was conducted, reporting on 96 operational copper smelters globally. This is a notable increase from the 50 smelters surveyed in 2003, yet the survey remains incomplete with missing information on several operations. The primary copper production tonnage from the surveyed smelters totaled 18.3 million metric tonnes, which represents 92% and 94% of the estimated total world primary production for 2018, as reported by ICSG and Wood Mackenzie, respectively. This study not only highlights current production trends but also sets a benchmark for future surveys in the field.
