Abstract

Language:

Steel containing carbon of 0.2% was coated with Ni and Cr through electrodeposition, and subsequently annealed at 400 and 600 °C for various durations. During annealing at 400 °C, the formation and growth of oxides occurred in the form of petals along with voids, cracks, and porosities. However, at 600 °C, nucleation and growth of chromium oxide whiskers produced a surface almost free from defects for holding times of 1 h and 2 h. Surface morphology assessments revealed that the bare steel, as-deposited steel, and specimens treated at 400 °C exhibited continuous corrosion in 3% NaCl solution. In contrast, specimens annealed at 600 °C for 1 and 2 h demonstrated improved corrosion resistance with high pitting potential due to the formation of a dense passive oxide film that minimized voids on the surface. This study underscores the significance of annealing temperature and time on the corrosion behavior of Ni-Cr coatings on steel, highlighting the potential for enhanced protection in saline environments.
