A number of developments in the modelling of the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process are described. The objective of this study is to improve the optimization of the CIP process through mathematical and economic models. The methodology involves examining the issues affecting the modelling of adsorption, and developing a preliminary model for the AARL elution process, which is fitted to data obtained from an industrial elution plant. Results indicate that acceptable agreement between model predictions and experimental data was found; however, the elution model is preliminary and requires further research to be a useful tool for optimization. Additionally, a case study demonstrates the successful design of an adsorption plant aimed at providing optimum financial return when treating a very low-grade stream by using the adsorption model alongside an economic model that estimates capital and operating costs for various plant configurations.
