Abstract

Language:

This study compares a standard leaching test method (EN 12457-3) with a modified pHstat-column leaching test method to evaluate the leaching properties of aggregates made from various alkaline solid wastes. The primary distinction between the methods lies in their chemical equilibrium conditions; the standard method approaches equilibrium, while the modified method does not. Key components analyzed include sodium, calcium, chloride, sulfate, and cadmium. Results indicate that both test methods yield comparable total leaching amounts for sodium and sulfate, but diverge in their insights regarding constituents that depend on pH and experimental conditions, such as flow rate. The findings suggest that the batch test effectively measures the total leached amount, whereas the modified column-pHstat test provides detailed insights into leaching trends for some constituents. These results have implications for solid waste management practices, particularly concerning the disposal and treatment of alkaline solid wastes.
