The advent and development of new technologies that will provide better yields, cleaner, and a safer environment is a global challenge for researchers. This study reports the direct bioleaching of zinc sourced from Abakaliki-Ishiagwu complex zinc sulphide ore deposit, primarily consisting of sphalerite ore. The extraction process includes mineral comminution, froth flotation, and roasting. Agro-cyanide derived from cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) leaves was employed as a leachant without additives. Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) analysis of the resultant leached liquor demonstrated the successful extraction of lead, copper, and iron alongside zinc, with concentrations of 149.25 ppm (Zn), 79.25 ppm (Pb), 0.25 ppm (Cu), and 4.25 ppm (Fe) after 21 days of leaching. However, prolonged exposure to ZnO ore resulted in diminishing yields of Zn, Fe, and Cu, indicating a decline in extraction efficacy over time. The intricate mechanisms of the leaching process warrant further investigation to enhance extraction efficiency and understanding of the relationships between leaching duration and metal recovery. This research contributes to the discourse on sustainable and eco-friendly mineral extraction methods.
