Abstract

Language:

Leaching is a critical liquid-solid operation involving the transfer of solutes from the solid phase to a liquid phase, thereby separating components originally within the solid. This process is essential across various industries including biological, food, and pharmaceuticals, for applications such as extracting sugars, oils, and pharmaceuticals from natural sources. Leaching is also prominent in metals processing, notably in the extraction of metals like gold from ores using aqueous solutions. The preparation of solids for leaching is influenced by several factors including the nature of the solid, size of the particles, and the distribution of soluble constituents. Generally, the leaching process follows five rate steps, beginning with solvent transfer and concluding with the solute's return to the bulk solution. The bottleneck in leaching often resides in the intraparticle diffusion or the solute's dissolution from the solid. An understanding of countercurrent multistage leaching processes further highlights the complexity of achieving optimal recovery rates, as variations in viscosity and density affect overall material balances during extraction. This comprehensive overview delineates the critical aspects and procedural requirements intrinsic to the leaching process.
