Sukinda chromite valley is one of the largest chromite deposits in India, contributing significantly to economic development while adversely affecting the environment. This study investigates the contamination of groundwater and surface water due to chromite mining activities and the associated solid waste, totaling approximately 7.6 million tons. The focus is on the concentration of hexavalent chromium (Cr +6) in various water sources, which ranges from 0.02 mg/l to 1.22 mg/l. A comprehensive leachate study indicates elevated levels of Cr +6 around the mine waste dump, and the geohydrological conditions influencing contaminant migration are analyzed. Utilizing Visual Modflow software, ground water flow and mass transport models are constructed to predict contaminant migration over 20 years. Findings reveal low contaminant migration due to poor permeability of top soil layers, although surface water quality is significantly impacted due to runoff. The study highlights the need for strategic planning to limit contaminant spread in mining areas, emphasizing the importance of understanding local hydrology for effective environmental management.
