In this investigation, the biological leaching of aluminum by isolated fungi from low grade bauxite (<50% Al2O3) was studied. The objective was to evaluate the efficiency of indigenous fungal species in solubilizing aluminum. Methodology involved biological leaching tests using Aspergillus niger and Penicillium notatum on Savored dextrose chloramphenicol agar as the medium, conducted in 250-ml Erlenmeyer flasks at 28°C and 150 rpm under aseptic conditions. Results indicated that indigenous specimen fungi were the most efficient, solubilizing 7080 mg of Al2O3/l at a 15% pulp density of bauxite. Additionally, wet chemical and atomic absorption spectrophotometry were utilized for determining metal content in the leaching solution. This study highlights the potential of using isolated fungi for aluminum recovery from low grade bauxite.
