The exhaustion of current vanadium sources and the emergence of new applications are driving the need for innovative methods of extraction. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive survey of the extractive metallurgy of vanadium, highlighting its unique challenges and chemical behavior. A historical analysis reveals that much of the existing literature provides limited insights into the precise metallurgy and chemistry of vanadium, which has evolved more as an art than a science due to its unpredictable chemical properties. The study explores various occurrences of vanadium, including its vital role in micro-organisms and deposits such as patronites and lead vanadates. It discusses the complex interplay between vanadium and other metals during extraction processes, as well as its importance in producing high-performance alloys. The results indicate that vanadium's active chemistry, including its four valencies, contributes significantly to its application in metallurgy, particularly in enhancing steel resilience and as a catalyst. The research concludes by emphasizing the importance of refining extraction methods to ensure the sustainable use of vanadium in modern applications.
