Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can play a crucial role in the decarbonization process that is being tackled worldwide; millions of electric vehicles are already provided with or are directly powered by LIBs, and a large number of them will flood the markets within the next 8–10 years. Proper disposal strategies are required, and sustainable and environmental impacts need to be addressed. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the various sustainable recycling processes used for LIBs, highlighting the technological advancements and methodologies employed in the recovery of valuable materials. Through an in-depth literature review, we examine existing recycling techniques, their efficiency, and potential environmental benefits. The results indicate that while multiple methods are available, the optimization of processes for increased recovery rates and decreased ecological footprints is essential for the future of battery recycling. The study emphasizes the importance of developing more effective recycling technologies that can handle the forthcoming surge in used LIBs, thereby contributing to a circular economy. By synthesizing current knowledge and identifying gaps in research, this work aims to inform future innovations and policy directions in the field of battery recycling.
