The most common case of crevice corrosion occurs on passive materials, particularly on stainless steels, in oxidizing chloride environment. In order to guarantee the arrest of the propagation of crevice corrosion, the potential has to be lower than a critical value: “the repassivation potential”. A simple and flexible crevice propagation model has been developed to allow parametric studies of the local solution in an attempt to identify repassivation conditions. The main results obtained allow to establish diagrams of stability of solid and gas phases within the crevice and to evaluate the influence of the external potential, the external chloride concentration and the geometry on the local chemistry. It appears that the deepest crevices are not necessary the worst. The introduction, at the crevice tip, of a simple criterion of repassivation reveals the existence of a repassivation potential which depends on the crevice geometry.
