Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the microbial dissolution of zinc-lead (Zn-Pb) sulfide minerals through the action of mesophilic iron and sulfur-oxidizing acidophiles. The objective was to evaluate the efficiency of these microorganisms in enhancing the leaching of Zn-Pb minerals under controlled pH conditions. A series of experiments were conducted to monitor changes in pH, redox potential, and bacterial growth over time. The results demonstrated that lower initial pH levels facilitated higher initial redox potential, correlating with increased bacterial activity. Over the course of the experiments, fluctuations in pH and redox potential were observed, indicating a dynamic interaction between bacterial metabolism and mineral dissolution rates. Notably, bacterial oxidation of ferrous ions (Fe2+) to ferric ions (Fe3+) contributed significantly to the overall increase in redox potential. The data suggest that the presence of mesophilic acidophiles not only promotes mineral dissolution but also stabilizes the pH in a range conducive to sustained microbial activity. Overall, these findings add valuable insights into the application of bioleaching strategies for Zn-Pb recovery from sulfide ores.
