Abstract

Language:

While pyrometallurgical processes are old technology and were the dominant and logical route used to treat sulfide concentrates, they are now challenged by new hydrometallurgical processes. In recent years, attempts have been made to avoid using autoclaves in the treatment of concentrates of zinc, copper, and nickel. However, the situation has reversed, and pressure hydrometallurgy is being applied in many operations. This paper outlines the current trends in these processes and discusses the future trajectory of extractive metallurgy, focusing on the emergence of hydrometallurgical innovations that enhance the processing of complex ores and minimize environmental impacts. The discussion highlights the competitive nature of new technologies against traditional pyrometallurgical methods, considering efficiency, economic viability, and compliance with environmental regulations. By providing a comprehensive overview of advancements in extractive metallurgy, this study aims to inform practitioners and researchers in the field about the latest developments and future directions in metallurgy. The findings indicate a significant shift towards hydrometallurgical approaches, demonstrating their growing importance in the industry.
