Water production poses significant challenges in the petroleum industry, particularly in brown fields and water drive reservoirs. The objective of this study was to explore the gelation time of an organically cross-linked water-shutoff system, influenced by factors such as cross-linker concentration, temperature, and brine concentration. Employing experimental methodology, key parameters affecting gelation time were analyzed in order to develop a mathematical model for predicting gelation behavior. Results indicated that temperature exerted the most substantial influence on gelation time, with an effect estimate of (-2.292), while brine concentration had the least impact (0.2083). Additionally, the interaction between cross-linker concentration and brine concentration demonstrated a neutral effect. The developed water-shutoff system exhibited favorable characteristics, including excellent initial viscosity, facilitating easy pumping and effective application for managing excessive water production and associated issues in oil wells. This study provides insights for optimizing gelation time in water control operations based on the identified parameters.
