This paper summarizes findings of a two-month investigation in Zambia and Zimbabwe and a one-month visit to Britain during 1990-1991. The objective was to evaluate the training and recruitment of mining engineers in the context of geopolitical changes. Methodologically, the study involved gathering information from contacts in the United States, along with on-ground observations and analysis of qualifications of mining engineers in British Columbia. Results indicate that Zambia's political unrest and economic devaluation, along with developments in Namibia and South Africa, have exacerbated recruitment challenges in the School of Mines. Conversely, Zimbabwe boasts a vigorous mining department. In the United States and Great Britain, mining departments are experiencing readjustments and contractions due to a decrease in industry scale. Therefore, the research highlights critical implications of these factors on the supply and training of mining engineers in the affected regions.
