The present paper reports the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the electricity peak load and power generation in the State of Kuwait during the partial and full curfews imposed in March, April and May 2020 using historic data and predictions from a statistical genetic algorithm model. A quantitative assessment is made of the economic and environmental impacts caused by the lockdowns. Comparison of measured peak demand for 2019 and 2020 with predictions for 2020 enabled an accurate evaluation of residential energy consumption in Kuwait, revealing an annual consumption of nearly 18 MWh per capita, the highest in the world. It showed that curfews to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 led to a reduction in electrical power demand by 17.6% compared to expected levels. Additionally, the study quantified the decrease in CO2, NOx, and CO emissions from power plants attributable to lower fuel consumption. A mathematical model was developed to predict peak electric load in the national grid based on climatic data from the Meteorological Department of Civil Aviation of Kuwait and the National Control Center (NCC).
