Fluid flow phenomenon in a tundish significantly depends on its shape, which can alter the flow patterns and consequently the fluid flow characteristics. This study investigates the impact of both shape variations and flow control devices on fluid dynamics within a six-strand billet caster tundish. A mathematical model was developed and validated using experimental data from previous studies, focusing on the symmetrical half of the tundish to analyze modifications in flow patterns due to shape changes and the configuration of the pouring chamber. Various flow patterns emerged from these alterations, emphasizing the importance of understanding fluid behavior to enhance inclusion flotation. The results indicated that specific flow characteristics could be achieved by optimizing the geometry of the tundish and flow control implementations, essential for maintaining casting temperature, homogenous chemistry, and steel cleanliness in the strands. This work contributes to the design and efficiency of flow control systems in industrial tundishes, suggesting that streamlined flow dynamics directly influence overall performance and quality in steel production.
