Since January 2006, H5N1 avian influenza has significantly impacted Nigeria's poultry population, causing substantial resource loss and raising concerns about potential outbreaks affecting both human and animal populations globally, particularly in resource-poor countries. This study aims to report on the field and laboratory surveillance efforts conducted in Nigeria, analyzing a comprehensive dataset that includes 1,821 tissue samples, 8,638 tracheal swabs, 7,976 cloacal swabs, and 7,328 avian sera over a two-year period, resulting in 312 positive results. The research successfully recovered 299 isolates of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1, primarily from diagnostic samples obtained from various poultry farming systems including backyard, small scale, and free-range farms. These findings underscore the critical role these farming practices play in the spread of avian influenza within Nigeria, while also emphasizing the necessity for continued surveillance in humans, given the essential interactions between humans and animals in Africa. Additionally, the results highlight the urgent need for improved border control measures. Notably, since October 2007, there have been no reported outbreaks of avian influenza in Nigeria.
