The Atlantic Forest, recognized for its remarkable biodiversity, is classified as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. This study aims to evaluate the chemical composition of leaves from native trees and the underlying soils within this region. Using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), we analyzed the predominant species, including Euterpe edulis, Bathysa meridionalis, and others, to determine their elemental concentrations. The results indicated that Euterpe edulis, the most abundant understory species, exhibited the lowest concentrations of elements except for zinc. Notably, variations in chemical composition were observed, yet the chemical specificity of tree species appeared to be more influential than soil variability on leaf concentrations. Monte-Carlo assisted factor analysis was employed to facilitate species discrimination based on the obtained factor values. Findings from this research underscore the potential of chemical analysis of native trees as a valuable tool for studying biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest.
