Abstract

Language:

Zirconia has been prepared from zircon concentrate by caustic fusion methods, utilizing zircon as a by-product from the tin ore concentration plant located on Bangka Island, Indonesia. The objective of this research was to enhance the ionic conductivity of zirconia by doping it with Yttria Stabilized-Zirconia (YSZ) and Calcia-Yttria into Zirconia (CYZ). The methodology involved the introduction of 8% mol yttrium oxide into zirconia, which was then sintered at 1500 °C for 5 hours, followed by determining the elemental composition via SEM/EDX and XRF and measuring the lattice parameters through X-ray diffraction. Ionic conductivity was evaluated using complex impedance spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the doping process allowed a phase transformation of zirconia from tetragonal to cubic, significantly enhancing ionic conductivity. However, the synthesized materials remained porous and did not yet fulfill the requisite characteristics for use as electrolyte materials.
