This research analyzes the fiscal regimes applicable to gold mining across ten contrasting jurisdictions in Africa and South America, aiming to determine the relative attractiveness of these regimes for new gold developments. The study focuses on the political and economic variables that influence the gold mining investment landscape in countries such as Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, South Africa, Tanzania, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guyana, and Peru. Adopting a comparative approach, data were gathered on the specific mineral policies, including royalty rates, corporation tax, and government ownership stakes. The findings indicate a lack of clarity among stakeholders regarding the overall competitiveness of the mineral policy regimes in each country. The report assesses the perceived and actual impacts of government policies on the share of gold mining revenues that benefit governments. By providing a cross-regional evaluation, this research contributes valuable insights into crafting more equitable and competitive mineral policies that can help enhance the attractiveness of gold mining as a means of advancing economic growth in these regions.
