Abstract

Language:

This paper addresses the simultaneous optimization of mining and mineral processing within the context of a prefeasibility study for a platinum project in South Africa. The objective is to enhance the value of mining operations by integrating various optimization techniques, thereby enabling better long-term planning decisions. A comprehensive review of prefeasibility designs and cost estimates was conducted alongside value optimization and sustainability evaluations. The methodology involved analyzing key factors contributing to net present value (NPV), including mine design, scheduling, and metallurgical recovery processes, while also weighing these against market conditions for product metals. The results demonstrate significant potential value uplifts through strategic enhancements such as activity-based costing, priority focus on high-net-value ore, optimized scheduling, and improved revenue streams through various processing adjustments. Furthermore, the investigation into non-financial features revealed that financial optimization could yield additional benefits, reinforcing the importance of a holistic approach to project development. The insights gained aim to guide the project team in the transition to the feasibility study phase.
