Efficient methods for the removal of natural organic matter (NOM) in waters have emerged. Among these are advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including O3/H2O2, O3/UV, UV/H2O2, TiO2/UV, H2O2/catalyst, Fenton and photo-Fenton processes, as well as ultrasound. This chapter presents an overview of recent research studies dealing with AOP methods for the removal of NOM and related compounds from drinking water. The removal results of AOPs are study-specific, depending on the water characteristics, particularly the amount of organic matter present. Therefore, characterization of the NOM in water is critical for designing and optimizing any AOP treatment. The organic characteristics of the treated water need to be determined to assess their influence on subsequent processes. Additionally, individual disinfection by-product (DBP) measurements and disinfection by-product formation potential (DBPFP) assessments play a significant role in evaluating the suitability of any AOP treatment. Collectively, this chapter highlights the various combinations of oxidants, radiation, and catalysts developed for effective removal of NOM and organic pollutants.
