This study investigates the interaction of oxygen with the surface of ruthenium at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 600° C using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The research aims to identify the different states of oxygen present on the Ru wafer surface. Methodologically, Ru 3d, 3p, MVV, valence band, and O 1s spectra were recorded to analyze the chemical interactions. Results revealed three different states of oxygen, with definitive identification of two species as O2− and dissolved atomic oxygen. Additionally, a third oxygen state associated with a peak at a binding energy of 532.3 eV in the O 1s spectrum and 11.7 eV in the photoemission spectrum was tentatively identified as a chemisorbed hydroperoxy radical. This investigation contributes valuable insights into the oxidation process of ruthenium and the catalytic behavior of this important metal in various chemical reactions.
