Abstract

Language:

Distillation is a critical process used in the purification of various materials, defined by terms such as vaporization and sublimation. This paper discusses the transition of substances from solid or liquid phases to gas phases requiring heat, emphasizing the role of vapor pressure as a property that dictates these transformations. The larger the vapor pressure, the greater the tendency for a substance to transition states. The boiling point, or normal boiling point, is identified as the temperature at which a liquid's vapor pressure matches the surrounding atmospheric pressure. Sublimation is introduced, highlighting the noticeable reduction in volumes of snow and ice under specific conditions. The paper also examines azeotropes—liquid mixtures exhibiting constant boiling behaviors at certain compositions, complicating separation through distillation. The influence of solute concentration on boiling points, such as in syrup preparation, further illustrates the complexity of distillation as a separation method. Ultimately, Raoult's Law is proposed as a foundational principle for understanding how distillation separates liquids based on their vapor pressures.
