Abstract

Language:

This paper discusses the solvent exchange process employed at Cyprus Bagdad Copper Company, particularly focusing on the improvements made in dump leaching methods since the initiation of open-pit copper mining in Bagdad, Arizona. The objective is to highlight advancements in operational techniques and their impact on production efficiency. The methodology includes employing scientific principles from general mining practices, with particular emphasis on rigid pH control and atomic absorption techniques for rapid and accurate assaying. Results indicate significant improvements in understanding dump behavior, enabling measurement and prediction of variabilities that have historically posed challenges. Furthermore, the findings reveal that while the dump can yield fluctuating profits, recent collaborations with the DeLaval Separator Corp. have led to effective management of organic sludge in the solvent exchange system. This innovation allows for high-percentage recovery of the organic reagents used, thus reducing operational costs. Overall, the experiences documented in this study provide valuable insights into optimizing leaching processes in copper mining.
