Simulation based casting is used in modern metal casting industries to a great extent. A number of software are available for casting simulations which allow methods engineers to model and verify a casting design to maximize yield and minimize defects. However, selection of casting simulation software is critical and necessitates acquiring the knowledge of commercially available software. A comparison amongst the selected casting simulation software has been done in this study. In total, eight software products are selected with a mix of both high-end and low-end casting simulation packages. The software tools are compared in terms of casting processes simulated, add-on modules (if any), solution methods used, defects prediction, typical clients/users, and advanced simulation capabilities. The results of this study provide a guide for casting industry personnel to select a casting simulation software based on their requirements. It is concluded that need-based selection of casting simulation software is a must to ensure high benefit-cost ratio of simulation based casting.
